The aim of my thesis is twofold. I first seek to identify problematic areas in the use of English academic phraseology in texts produced by Romanian university students. Then, the findings of this study will be used to conceptualize a web-based tool which will offer phraseology support for academic writing in English for L1 Romanian students.
Brief presentation of the thesis
PhraseApp – a tool for academic writing support focusing on improving the use of English academic phraseology. It is envisioned to include various types of support such as, integration of expert academic writing corpus or data-driven learning activities.
The tool will be designed specifically for Romanian learners of English.Applied result of the thesis

My research stay at Iowa State University (ISU) was a wonderful opportunity to work with outstanding scholars from the field of Applied Linguistics. At a personal level, it gave me the chance to experience life in the U.S.A., and to meet people from all over the world.
While at ISU, I completed and published a book review in the English for Specific Purposes Journal under the guidance of Dr. Elena Cotos. I also conducted an extensive literature review for my PhD project and tested several corpus extraction procedures.
ISU offered excellent academic development opportunities as well. I audited two classes in the Applied Linguistics and Technology PhD programme: English for Specific Purposes & Corpus Linguistics and Language Teaching. In addition, attended various workshops, such as Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication seminars.

English Language Teaching meets Corpus Linguistics: a case study of upper-secondary students’ argumentative essay writing in L2 English in Romania Topic

My research is motivated by the disparity between the potential of corpus linguistics and its underuse in EFL classrooms. By focusing on argumentative essay writing, a crucial skill evaluated in national and international English exams, my thesis directly addresses a practical need within the Romanian educational system. The purpose of my thesis is to explore how corpus linguistics analysis can be used to inform and improve English language teaching in Romanian high schools. My thesis employs a hybrid methodology that integrates quantitative and qualitative corpus analysis techniques. At the heart of this approach lies the AGORA (ArGumentative & Opinion Romanian learner essAys) corpus, a self-compiled learner corpus of 1,083 L2 English argumentative and opinion essays written by upper-secondary students (grades 9th-12th) in Romania between 2021 and 2023. The AGORA corpus was compared to a sample from the Learner Corpus of Native English Essays (LOCNESS), used as a benchmark corpus. Tools like AntConc and LancsBox X were used for generating wordlists, frequency lists, and key word analyses. Further qualitative analysis involved the KWIC (Key Words in Context) tool, followed by error analysis using the LanguageTool API to automate error detection, which was then manually refined. The novelty of my research lies in the creation and in-depth analysis of the AGORA corpus, which is the first digitalised English learner corpus specifically designed for Romanian pre-university settings. Thus, my thesis has impact in the field of English language education by providing empirical evidence and practical recommendations, enriching teaching practices for non-native English learners in Romania.
