Interns/practitioners for the Academic year 2019/2020:

  • Florina-Maria Andercău
    • Florina-Maria Andercău, 1st year, Romanian language and literature - English language and literature

    About Florina:

My name is Florina and… I love words! My lifelong passion has been to analyse them, to profoundly understand them, to enjoy being surrounded by them. And CODHUS is the perfect place to chase my dreams. I truly want to learn new things and to be in the presence of people who love words as much as I do. I think it will be an exhilarating experience!”

Topic of her individual research paper:

Virtual friends or marketing experts? The marketing language of influencers (vloggers, beauty gurus, Instagram influencers etc.)

    About her experience in CODHUS:

“I consider that choosing CODHUS for my internship was beneficent for my personal development. The assigned activities were challenging, meant to awaken our desire for research. The first activity consisted of text digitization and the creation of a corpus-expert that would be useful for the literary analyzes that we were going to do in various disciplines. This laborious process acquainted me with valuable critical analyzes regarding texts studied in the 2nd semester of Romanian literature, opening interesting perspectives that could be successfully exploited in my own research.

My individual research involved more refined, more personal, exciting work. Under the careful guidance of the coordinators, we explored the territories of corpus linguistics, learning how to approach texts, how to analyze them quantitatively and qualitatively, how to make connections between seemingly disparate results in order to reach a favorable result. Also, I developed digital skills, using the latest technologies for analyzing text corpora. Moreover, I learned how to compose and write an academic paper based on a digital analysis.

I think that I performed more than satisfactorily in carrying out the tasks entrusted to me, because the pleasure of exploring the territories of corpus linguistics was doubled by a responsible approach, both on my part and on the part of the coordinators. It is undeniable that all the activities I have done will be useful to me in the future. A future that I see revolving around these types of approaches to the texts, also due to this first and important step that was this internship opportunity.”

Topic of her individual research paper:

In Their Own Words: A Study of the Language of Hollywood

    About her experience in CODHUS:

“I consider that my performance was a satisfactory one, I managed to organize myself well enough to complete in time both the task received and the individual research part. From my point of view, this activity was a very useful one, in which I have acquired new skills that will help me in the future and I am open to the possibility of future collaboration.”

  • Teodora Maria Bogoevici
    • Teodora Bogoevici, 1st year: English language and literature - German language and literature

    About Teo:

“I signed up for this project because I am interested in knowing more about the semantic metamorphoses of words over time and I wish to use them correctly, depending on the contexts, so as not to fall into ridicule. I am also fond of the idea of being part of a research team and I believe that all of these will help me to develop both personally and professionally.”

Topic of her individual research paper:

Elizabeth Cady Stanton: feminist histories in documents (in the Library of Congress digital archives)

    About her experience in CODHUS:

“After the experience within the project, I consider that I have developed digital skills, but also language skills. Like usuall, any beginning is more difficult, but with small steps I managed to understand the process of editing and interpreting the received texts. The programs I learned to use better and better along the way exposed me to another branch of technology, which I didn't know about and don't think I would have learned about in other contexts. The individual research paper was the task that required the most involvement, being also the most interesting and attractive. I had the opportunity to approach a topic that I am passionate about and to apply all the knowledge acquired so far in a final paper this semester. I am very pleased with the choice made to be part of the ROGER-CODHUS team.“

  • Margareta Boicu
    • Margareta Boicu, 2nd year: English language and literature - Spanish language and literature

    About Ana:

Depiction of diseases in poetry: plague, cholera, COVID-19. A corpus-based study

    About her experience in CODHUS:

"I consider that, during my internship, I was pretty  involved in the challenging tasks I received. I have managed to develop my skills in using digital tools in corpus linguistics research, which I consider essential in the future to carry out other similar research activities. I discovered new interests (the pleasure of using digital literature research tools, of analyzing them) through the individual research I did. This would not have happened elsewhere. Everything was new at the beginning, it seemed a bit difficult, but with the help of the workshops I managed to learn how to work in the research of the CODHUS center and I am sure that the knowledgeI gathered will be useful in my future career.”

  • Florin-Andrei Eșu
    • Florin-Andrei Eșu, 1st year: Romanian language and literature - English language and literature

    About Florin:

“My name is Eșu Forin-Andrei and I am currently studying at the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology, from WUT, my specialism being Languages and literatures (Romanian-English). I have applied to be a volunteer at CODHUS because I think it is a wonderful idea to incorporate all the works of a great writer into one single corpus. Also, I am interested in linguistics and my abilities in the digital field are quite good. I want to gain experience and I am ready to learn anything in order to be efficient.”

    Topic of his individual research:

American presidents (in the Library of Congress digital archives)

    About his experience in CODHUS:

“First of all, I would like to say that it was very interesting and enjoyable to practice at CODHUS and I do not regret this decision at all. So far, I have had two tasks: to create a corpus that aims to demonstrate the meaning of the word "people" in the speeches of US President Abraham Lincoln and to transcribe specialized articles in the field of literary studies. I realized how much I enjoy doing my own research and coming up with new results and information based on my work (I learned many controversial things about President Abraham Lincoln and my opinion about his personality changed little, I found out, by the way, how can you decipher a message hidden in a political speech, but I will not go into details). In conclusion, I learned that I have to be responsible for the choices I made, I learned to read a text in depth and find out what it hides about the author, but most importantly I had the experience of getting involved in a serious project and found out what it implies this (fulfilling a task assigned by the deadline, teamwork, research on your own, taking responsibilities).”

  • Elena-Mirabela Grama
    • Mirabela Grama, 1st year: English language and literature - Italian language and literature)

    About Mirabela:

I chose to become involved in CODHUS because it represents an opportunity to learn more about research and to contribute to innovation in the field of linguistics.”

Topic of her individual research paper:

The language of Romanian administration: an interview-based corpus case study

    About her experience in CODHUS:

”I think that the internship taught me how to be more responsible, how to use my time in a productive way, and how to ask for help when I need it. I worked on corpus text coding programs, learned how a research program works, and wrote my own research paper, based on data I collected and analyzed. This offered me a better understanding of a scientific paper and what exactly that means. I also had a translation activity, which made me research and get to know both my mother tongue and English better. This period helped me a lot in terms of personal development.”

  • Paula Pereș
    • Paula Pereș, 2nd year: Romanian language and literature - English language and literature

    About Paula:

Topic of her individual research paper:

TV language in Britain: how does it differ from “standard language”?

    About her experience in CODHUS:

“During my internship at CODHUS, I can say that I participated with pleasure and great interest in the activities carried out; they aimed without a doubt the formation of new skills, which I am sure will be of real use to me in the future. The activities were clear, with a well-defined purpose and there were always competent and kind people available to explain any questions along the way. At the same time, I found some personal aspects that I should work on more, but also about my strengths. It was an interesting experience, really educational and in a pleasant team!”

  • Delia Roxana Prohap
    • Delia Prohap, 1st year: English language and literature - German language and literature

    About Delia:

“I am a student in the first year at the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology of the West University of Timișoara, specializing in Languages and literatures. I am mostly passionate about literature and languages. Participating in #DIGITTworld - Digital Linguistics Workshop powered by ROGER has aroused my interest in corpus linguistics and digital humanities. I believe that this project represents an opportunity to gain new knowledge in the fields that I am most interested in.”

Topic of her individual research paper:

Vernacular elements in song lyrics. A corpus study

    About her experience in CODHUS:

“The activity carried out during the internship consisted in contributing to the creation of corpora and completing an individual research on a certain topic. The tasks were not difficult, but they seemed a little bit challenging because they required a lot of attention and precision, especially when it comes to transforming essays into UTF-8 text format. At first, the text processing and coding seemed a bit complicated to me, but now I understand how to proceed. I really liked the fact that I was able to communicate openly. I also found the individual research part interesting because I have never had the opportunity to do such an activity before. I enjoyed doing research for this task and approaching the chosen topic from a linguistic point of view. I think I did a good job. I believe that the programs used and the knowledge gained during the internship will be useful in the future.”

  • Bianca Marinela Socaci

When I found out about your team, I thought you were an interesting research centre and I decided to apply for the position of practitioner. At the time of preparing the CV and the letter of intent, I was more informed and I learned about your activity, your methods and goals in research and I knew that I also wanted to participate in all these activities. The projects ran by the center so far seem captivating and I want to take part in the following activities and projects.”

Topic of her individual research paper:

The language of teenagers. Where does “gen” come from?

    About her experience in CODHUS:

“I had the pleasure of doing my internship at the CODHUS research center. The assignments seemed interesting to me, considering the fact that since high school I was captivated by the tasks related to both literature and technology. I liked the first task I received, namely the collection and processing of articles in the field of Political Science; is was not difficulty, and the articles were prepared and delivered according to the deadline. The second task, writing an article on a certain topic, was a bit more difficult considering that the texts needed for the corpus are actually transcripts of some vlogs, made entirely by me, but the part of processing, researching and writing the article were pleasant. I believe that the knowledge gained will be of great use to me in the future if I choose a career in this field.”
