In 27-28 April 2023, the national student colloquium “Emerging Theories and Practices in Literary and Linguistic Studies” took place. The event was organised by the Faculty of Letters of Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca. In the section “Case Studies (EN)”, Maria-Simona Bica (CODHUS student-volunteer in the last two years) presented the paper titled The Pitiful, The Pious, The Progressive: A Network of Antigone’s Socio-Cultural and Personal Reconstructions. Maria Bica, a Master’s student in two programs (Literature and Culture – Romanian Contexts, European Contexts/ American Studies, 2nd year), has written a research paper that combines a comparative perspective and digital humanities: the study analyses several reinterpretations of Sophocles’ Antigone, starting from the 5th century original text to the 21st century adaptations. It explores the tensions between the reconstructions of the tragedy as a performance of the standards from a specific historical period and the authors’ personal agendas, values, and aesthetic preferences. The study includes a corpus analysis on 20 “variants” of Antigone and the application of stylometric tools, focusing on the network of three prototypes of the protagonist.
