March 2022, SPOR series launch

Launch of Corpus Related Digital Humanities: Interdisciplinary Micro Perspectives (EUV) at Bookfest Timisoara

The CODHUS research centre (Centre for Corpus Related Digital Approaches to Humanities), affiliated to the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology of UVT, launched the first volume of the SPOR (Science Popularization Reports) series at the West University Publishing House, in the frame of “Research Library” collection. Through this series coordinated by Mădălina Chitez, Roxana Rogobete and Loredana Bercuci, CODHUS aims to disseminate and popularize the methods and tools used in various case studies in the digital humanities domain, and this volume is the first in Romania to bring together research initiatives within the field. Entitled Corpus Related Digital Humanities: Interdisciplinary Micro Perspectives and edited by Mădălina Chitez, Roxana Rogobete, Loredana Bercuci, Andreea Dincă, Raluca-Andreea Petruș, the publication is bilingual (Romanian-English) and contains 13 studies carried out by experienced researchers or students who have worked as interns or volunteers in CODHUS. Each chapter reflects the authors’ views on the use of digital methods in specific areas of the humanities (general linguistics, literature or cultural studies). At the same time, the volume demonstrates the interdisciplinary potential of research using such methods, through insights into political studies, gaming, popular culture, film studies, discourse analysis, etc. The CODHUS debut event with the SPOR series took place on Thursday, 31 March 2022, at 15:00, at Bookfest Timișoara, with the support of the West University Publishing House (director: Marilena Tudor). The guests of the meeting were Assoc. Prof. Valy Ceia (LIT pro-dean and CODHUS vice-president) and Cristina Oneț (graphic designer of the book).

September 2019, #DIGITTworld – Digital Linguistics Workshop powered by ROGER and CODHUS

On Thursday, September 26, 2019, the 1st year BA students of the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology participated in a workshop prepared by the researchers team of the ROGER project, a workshop that was named #DIGITTworld – Digital Linguistics Workshop, the first event that promotes CODHUS (Centre for Corpus Related Digital Approaches to Humanities).

In the first part of the workshop, dr. Mădălina Chitez and assist. dr. Roxana Rogobete presented the mission of ROGER project to the students. The main aspects discussed during the workshop were the project’s objectives, the sources of funding, the digital age and, implicitly, the digital tools that help to carry out the research work in the Humanities, but also the importance of improving the academic writing in Romania, by carrying out some ongoing research. Furthermore, the students were acquainted with certain key concepts of the project, namely corpus, corpus linguistics, digital humanities, but also with the activity that the researchers of the ROGER project have undertaken. Also, the 1st year students were presented the new Centre for Corpus Related Digital Approaches to Humanities – CODHUS –, which brings many opportunities to students, through volunteering and/ or practice activities.

In the second part of the workshop, assist. dr. Loredana Bercuci and Andreea Dincă carried out, together with the students, a series of extremely interesting practical activities regarding corpus linguistics, a key research focus in CODHUS. For example, they were able to observe, with the help of online tools, certain constant occurrences of words in a specific corpus of texts or even the analysis of some well-known vloggers’ language.

The students were enthusiastic about this activity, arousing their interest for future activities in which they could be involved. The activity ended with an extremely interactive and amusing quiz on linguistics, which brought some delicious “prizes” to the students with the best answers.
